Doc Kieft's teaching style, which emphasized one on one learning, had a big impact on his students. Many students said that they could relate to him more than any other professor on campus. As one board of trustee member said, "He had the ability to speak to students where they were and to provide the connection that they needed." The effect he had on students was due to his dedication as a teacher. He would stay in his office until 11:00 pm, even on the eve of exams, to help students better understand the material. In recognition of his teaching and leadership, Doc was awarded the Teaching and Campus Leadership award in 1989.
