The Paul Harris Fellow award "acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International." The first award was given in 1946. Early recipients were given a medallion, but today recipients receive a certificate of recognition and a pin (https://www.rotary.org/myrotary/en/history-paul-harris-fellow-recognition). The award is given out by Rotary International and it is in "appreciation of tangible & significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world" (Cathy Betar, E-mail Interview, 2015). Past recipients have been President Jimmy Carter and astronaut James Lovell.
